St. Nicholas market in Mitterdorf: 20 years of tradition and festivities
On November 30th, Mitterdorf an der Raab will once again be transformed into a center for tradition and conviviality. The Nikolomarkt with its spectacular Perchtenlauf, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, attracts thousands of visitors to the region in the Weiz district every year. This special day begins at 4 p.m., with ample parking available and a convenient shuttle service offered to make guests' journeys easier.
The roots of the event go back to 2003, when the first St. Nicholas Market was launched. Just two years later, the Mitterdorf customs group was founded, which has served as the heart of this popular event ever since. The founding members include some well-known faces: including the mayor Thomas Derler and the current chairman Matthias Mittendrein. This committed group has created numerous events that shape the cultural life of the community.
Diverse event program
The customs group not only initiated the St. Nicholas market, but also organized many other events such as Plattler meetings, table tennis tournaments and the popular Sackl slide. The Krampus home visits are particularly popular and have now achieved cult status in the region. Such traditional customs promote a sense of community and ensure a lively culture in Mitterdorf.
The highlight of the Nikolomarkt is without a doubt the Perchtenlauf. This is a custom that involves impressive masks and thunderous singing. This year, numerous Perchten are expected again, who will captivate spectators with their festive robes and masked faces. Up to 3,000 spectators stream through the streets so as not to miss this unique spectacle.
An event for the whole family
The organizers strive to ensure that the St. Nicholas Market is an experience for the entire family. In addition to the spectacular scenery, great emphasis is also placed on child-friendly activities. A wide range of culinary offerings ensures that there is something for everyone to enjoy. As a crowning conclusion, visitors can look forward to a large fireworks display that will make the night shine.
However, there is a lot of commitment and organization behind such a large event. “We need over 70 helpers for a run like this,” say representatives of the customs group. These numbers make it clear how important volunteer support is for the success of the event. The customs group currently has more than 100 members who actively contribute to the success of the St. Nicholas market.
Overall, the Nikolomarkt in Mitterdorf an der Raab has established itself as one of the largest and most traditional events in the Weiz district. The diversity of the program and the appealing offerings ensure that the event will remain a popular event in the annual calendar in the future and encourage further generations to continue the tradition.
