Landtag election 2024: Results and candidates in the Weiz district

The state elections in Styria heralded a new chapter in the political landscape of the federal state on November 24th. In the Weiz district, exactly 72,384 citizens entitled to vote were called to give their vote, which made the turnout in the region an exciting event.

Overall, the voters in the constituency of Eastern Styria, which also include the districts of Hartberg-Fürstenfeld and Southeast Styria, were available. In Weiz, the citizens were able to vote on 107 polling stations. In addition to the regular votes, 13,782 election cards were also issued, which significantly expanded the possibility of voting.

The competitive mandates

A total of 48 mandates are awarded in the new state parliament. Nine of them are eliminated by Eastern Styria, and the candidates are ready to fight for their places in the state parliament. The mandatars of the past legislative period included representatives of the ÖVP, SPÖ, FPÖ and the Greens. These were in particular Lukas Schnitzer, Franz Fartek, Silvia Karelly, Andreas Kinsky, Julia Paar, Hubert Lang (all ÖVP), as well as Wolfgang Dolesch and Cornelia Schweiner (both SPÖ), Patrick Derler and Herbert Kober (both FPÖ) and Andreas Lackner (Greens). A striking cut is that important actors such as Hubert Lang and Cornelia Schweiner are no longer available, which could influence the dynamics of choice.

The first projections were expected at 4 p.m. immediately after the polling stations were closed, and on Sunday evening it could possibly be determined which party received the most votes. A high expectations were fueled in the run -up to the election, since the voters prepared for the results of a uncertain political future.

A crucial aspect of choice is the comparison to the results of the previous election 2019. At that time, the ÖVP in the Weiz district reached 42.0 percent of the vote, followed by the SPÖ with 22.9 percent, the FPÖ with 17.7 percent, the Greens with 10.2 percent, NEOS with 4.0 percent and the KPÖ with 3.2 percent. In the constituency of Eastern Styria as a whole, the ÖVP even turned out to be a superior force with 47.2 percent. However, this preference for the ÖVP could change with the upcoming results, especially in view of the extensive changes in the candidate lists.

The new state parliament in Styria is obliged to be praised by December 18 at the latest, which means that the political parties have to act quickly. The elections are an important indicator of the mood among the population and the future orientation of regional politics. So it remains to be seen how the voter decision will affect the composition of the future state parliament. Further information and results on the election can be found at www.kleineZEITUNG.AT .
