Advent run 2023: Light of hope for flood victims in Köflach
A special event will take place again this year in the charming town of Köflach. The traditional Advent run, which is being organized by Alfred Gert and his dedicated team for the 18th time, runs over a distance of 140 kilometers from Mariazell to Köflach. This year the event is all about helping the flood victims, especially the Trattner family, who suffered serious damage in Teigitschgraben. The event will take place on the night of December 14th and 15th and will have a deep human touch.
Alfred Gert recently visited the affected Trattner family, who have no longer been able to live in their owner-managed houses since the devastating flood. Hildegard and Werner Trattner had to resort to emergency accommodation because their apartments are still uninhabitable. “Hildegard Trattner kept crying while telling the story,” reported Gert with obvious compassion. The total damage is estimated at at least 200,000 euros, while the family has so far only been able to receive 25,000 euros from various funds and insurance companies. This imbalance motivated Gert to donate the proceeds from the Advent run to the affected family.
A run full of solidarity
The tradition of the Advent run has already raised considerable sums for charitable purposes in recent years. According to Gert, more than 40,000 euros were raised for those in need in the previous 17 editions. “This year we are once again putting ourselves at the service of a good cause,” says Gert. Preparations for this special run are in full swing and the participants are excited. On December 14th, the Peace Light will be handed over by Superior Michael Staberl in the Mariazell pilgrimage church. Together with around 30 other people, the light is then taken on the long journey to Köflach.
The runners will start in Mariazell in the late afternoon at 1:30 p.m. and set off on a 21-hour route. The route takes them into the night and the first light of the morning, which they are welcomed together in Köflach. The arrival will take place on December 15th at 10:15 a.m. during a Peace Mass enriched with artistic performances. The event is not only a sporting competition, but also a sign of community and solidarity.
Dedicated supporters and donation opportunities
This year the event will be accompanied by a variety of supporters, including Mayor Jochen Bocksruker and city councilor Andreas Albrecher, who are among the group of West Styrians joining the run. René Pöschl from the Köflacher Rathauscafé is also an active supporter and has gained new sponsors for the event. These community actions show how strong cohesion is in the region, especially in moments of need.
For those who cannot take part in the run but would still like to help, there is the option to make donations at any time. A special donation account called “Advent Run 2024” is available to support the flood victims. The IBAN is AT78 3848 /000 0607 4140 and the BIC is RZSTAT2G487. Every contribution, no matter how small, can make a difference.
This Advent run not only embodies the spirit of Christmas, but also the strength of community in times of crisis. In addition to the sporting aspect, the event is a symbol of hope and help for all those who suffered from the floods. Participating and supporting the run brings light and confidence to the hearts of those affected.
