Theaterland Steiermark: New concept for creative diversity and development!

Today a breath of fresh air was announced in “Theaterland Steiermark”. The new artistic directors, Kiegerl and Tögl, have developed an innovative three-pillar model that forms the basis for future theater work in Styria. This model is establishing itself as a working compass for developing offerings and setting priorities in the region. The three pillars include the breadth of theater offerings for a diverse audience, reliable partnerships for the Styrian theater scene and quality assurance through further training, international networking and the promotion of young talent. According to Kleine Zeitung, these points not only serve to further develop the theater landscape, but also to promote cultural dialogue within the community.

The new directors are paying particular attention to the future theater days, which are to be organized in a uniform manner. The plan is to expand the festivals, with five to seven multi-day events taking place every year, which are linked to artist residencies and theater workshops. A new, innovative format called “mobile living room” is being introduced to promote artist conversations, workshops and discourses, while also acting as a research tool for artists.

Diverse festivals and anniversary celebrations

In 2024, Theaterland Steiermark could celebrate its 20th anniversary. The balance sheet so far is impressive1,900 theater projectsin 14 Styrian regions, 180,000 visitors and 500 premieres and Austrian premieres. Kiegerl and Tögl plan to present new ideas and projects as part of the Summer Dream Harbor, which will take place from May 2nd to 8th, 2024 in Wies, Stainz, Bad Radkersburg and Eibiswald. The festival attracts almost 3,000 visitors with its international puppet theater performances.

Additional festivals are also planned for 2024, including:

  • „Literarische Nahversorgung“ am 21. Mai mit 13 Lesungen.
  • ARTigKLASSISCH vom 5. bis 8. Juni mit Inszenierungen von Shakespeare, Nestroy und Kreisler.
  • THEATERFABRIK WEIZ am 26. & 27. Juni, ein Theater von Kindern für Kinder.
  • THEATERTAGE WEISSENBACH vom 19. Juli bis 2. August mit 8 Projekten, darunter „Elektra“ und „Abschiedsdinner“.
  • WERKSTATT-Festival in Oberzeiring vom 17. bis 22. September mit 10 Uraufführungen.

Cultural-political developments in Styria

The implementation of the plans and festivals depends heavily on the future cultural funding policy. Since the summer of 2021, Governor Christopher Drexler has initiated cultural policy guidelines for Styria, which are based on a large number of discussions and regional conferences. These have manifested a strong integration of the Styrian regions. The results achieved from discussions with representatives of cultural institutions and regional initiatives are a basis for the new cultural policy guidelines, which are also intended to strengthen the dialogue between the regions, as Verwaltung Steiermark reports.

Theater work continues in Oberzeiring, which is now experiencing a change in the artistic management team. This region will likely continue to be an important part of Theaterland Styria's festival landscape, while at the same time focusing on promoting young talent. Between the future festivals, the focus is on the young talent festival in Eastern Styria, which is planned for 2027.
