Maxlaunmarkt 2023: Experience tradition and culture in Niederwölz!

The Maxlaunmarkt in Niederwölz, which takes place from October 11th to 14th, is a long-standing tradition that is deeply rooted in the community. Mayor Albert Brunner explains that the success of this event is ensured primarily by the help of the entire community. This year the market is being held for the 488th time and brings together numerous visitors and locals.

A central highlight of the market is the carrying out of the Freyung, which is ceremoniously lifted from the balcony of the Stinglbauer onto the street on Sunday. A choir intones the Freyungslied while a procession leads to the market area and the municipal office. The Freyung will remain there until 6 p.m. on Sunday and Monday before it is safely stored at the Stinglbauer. This tradition has a history of over 350 years and means that the Freyung must under no circumstances fall into the hands of another place. Part of this custom is that the Freyung is carried back in the evening with singing and G'sstanzln.

A special custom – The Maxlauner

The role of Maxlauner is particularly honorable. This year it will be taken over by Daniel Reinmüller, who is also responsible for selecting the Maxlauner in secret until the big Sunday. The Maxlauner's job is to smear paint on the faces of women and girls - a custom that is said to bring good luck. This traditional task requires that the person from Maxlaun is a native of Niederwölz and is unmarried.

Another important element of the market is the specific document, which dates back to 1536, and which is read out in front of the municipal office before the market is officially opened. Last year, ring of honor holder Walter Horn had the honor of reading out this certificate. At this time, Gundula Sapper, the community's kindergarten teacher, was also honored with the “Golden Badge of Honor” for her ongoing commitment.

A feast for all senses

After the formal reading of the certificate, visitors can enjoy the exhibition organized by Sissi Gruber. This show offers a platform for regional products and services, and highlights should not be missing this year either. Celebrity guests enrich the celebration and make the event an experience for everyone. The entire weekend is characterized by conviviality, culinary delights and entertainment, while keeping traditions alive.

The Maxlaunmarkt is not only an important part of local culture, but also an example of cohesion and community spirit in Niederwölz. The participation of a broad audience shows that such traditional events are of great importance in today's world. You can find more information on this topic at www.meinbezirk.at.
