VKI reaches agreement: 23 million euros for diesel scandal victims

The Association for Consumer Information (VKI) has made an important agreement with Volkswagen as part of the diesel scandal. Around 10,000 affected people across Austria have joined a class action lawsuit, with about a fifth, i.e. around 2,000 people, dating from Styria. This agreement is an important step for the numerous victims.

The argument revolves around manipulated software in the cars, which led to the vehicles on the test bench show better exhaust gas values than in actual traffic. This has caused many buyers to pay a higher price for their vehicles than justified, and the class action lawsuit has been running for six years.

3200 euros compensation per person concerned

A total of 23 million euros will be distributed to those affected. The sum is evenly divided into all participants in the collective suits, whereby the individual purchase price of the car plays a role. "Those affected are informed directly by the VKI about the compensation they receive," explains Stefan Schreiner from the VKI. It is estimated that the individuals concerned could expect compensation of around 3,200 euros in Styria.

The lawsuit was successfully conducted not only in Styria, but also in other federal states, such as in Graz and Leoben. In addition to the VKI class action lawsuit, there are also several thousand individual lawsuits that will have to be edited soon. The number of vehicles affected in Austria is estimated at over 360,000, with eleven million vehicles affected worldwide.
