Pure excitement: local council elections in Styria - first results!

On March 23, 2025, comprehensive municipal elections in Styria took place in 284 municipalities. The elections started on Sunday morning and the first polling stations already closed at 10:00 a.m., the last at 2:30 p.m. The election results will be released from 2:30 p.m., but the tension in the communities remains high until the count. The weather during the election Sunday was rainy, which may have an impact on the turnout.

In order to promote a high turnout, SPÖ Mayor Kurt Wallner from Leoben gave his voice at 8:00 a.m. and called on the citizens to perceive their democratic right. In the municipality of Hitzendorf, which counts around 7,600 inhabitants and is home to ÖVP Agricultural councilor Simone Schmiedtbauer, a high turnout was found. Hitzendorf is currently ruled by a ÖVP mayor.

In the elections in 2020, ÖVP was able to reach 47.2% of the votes, while the SPÖ came to 31.9%. The FPÖ reached 8.20%, the green 4.75%, the KPÖ 1.64% and other lists were 6.37%. Compared to these elections, it can be expected that some shifts in the votes will become visible after today's election day, since the ÖVP predicted an increase of 4.5 percentage points in advance.

The next election in Graz will only take place in 2026, which gives the communities in Styria of today's election day. The results and developments of the elections are being pursued and are crucial for the future political orientation of Styria.
