Platinum for Holcim: Austria's cement works lead the way to sustainability

In a remarkable development, the two Austrian Holcim cement works in Mannersdorf and Retznei were awarded the highest award in the cement industry for sustainable practices, the platinum certificate. This award was awarded by the independent Concrete Sustainability Council (CSC) at the end of November and shows the top position of Holcim on a global level.

The CSC evaluates the ecological, economic and social sustainability within the value chain of cement and concrete. Holcim has reached the highest number of points in the extended certification system 3.0, which means that their products are recognized in common building assessment systems such as ÖGNI and DGNB. Haimo Primas, CEO of Holcim Austria, was enthusiastic about this recognition and emphasized how important the entire team is for this success.

long -term goals in the focus

Holcim pursues ambitious goals in terms of sustainability and has undertaken to achieve net zero emissions for their cement works by 2030. According to Primas, it is the largest transformation project in the Austrian cement industry that requires significant investments. More than 400 million euros are planned for the implementation of necessary changes that also require support in the infrastructure.

One of the core strategies by Holcim is the development of CO2-reduced cement products, with the aim of further minimizing the ecological footprint. Over half of the cement sold in Austria meets the EU taxonomy standard for climate protection. Gernot stephart, sales and marketing director, emphasizes that sustainability will be decisive for the choice of products by business partners in the future.

commitment to education and innovation

In order to further consolidate its pioneering role in the construction industry, Holcim launched the "Sustainable Construction Academy". In collaboration with leading institutions such as the University of Cambridge, this academy offers a practical program for sustainable construction. In addition, a new platform was founded, which is known as "Building Icons" and shows best practice projects in the area of sustainable building.

As part of her ongoing efforts to be responsible for ecological responsibility, Holcim was recently honored by the renowned Science Based Targets Network (SBTN), which underlines her obligation to scientifically well -founded goals for environmental protection. These awards and initiatives show how Holcim not only redefines their role in cement production, but also wants to actively contribute to the transformation of the construction industry.
