Leibnitzer Perchtenlauf 2023: Over 10,000 visitors celebrate the spectacle

The city of Leibnitz recently experienced an impressive rush of more than 10,000 visitors who marveled at the annual Perchtenlauf in the main square. With 30 different Perchten groups presenting a total of around 400 Perchten from all over Austria, a true spectacle was on offer. This event typically attracts large crowds, but the turnout this year was particularly notable.

The preparations for the event were made with particular attention to safety and family friendliness. “The organizers were all the more anxious to ensure that safety and family-friendliness were the order of the day,” explained a representative of the leisure and youth club, which is responsible for organizing the event in collaboration with the municipality of Leibnitz.

The large field of participants

An exciting fact about the Perchtenlauf is that a total of 70 Perchten groups applied to take part. Ultimately, 30 of them were selected; these groups had proven themselves to be reliable and adhered to the established rules. NAbg. Josef Muchitsch, who brought the festival to Leibnitz in the past, remembered his experiences: "You won't go home from the Perchtenlauf in Schladming without blue feet. And that especially hurts!"

In order to allay the youngest visitors' fear of the often frightening masks, a presentation of the masks took place in the afternoon, which took place in daylight. This early event, which began at 2 p.m., gave children the opportunity to familiarize themselves with traditional costumes and feel less influenced by the darkness and frightening characters.

The children's Perchten run began in good time as dusk fell. There was also record attendance here and the children were accompanied by several Nikolos while sweets were distributed along the way to lighten the mood and spread joy.

A smooth process

The big Perchtenlauf started promptly at 5 p.m. and offered a loud, fiery spectacle in the heart of the wine town of Leibnitz. This was the 28th edition of this popular event, and the organizers, including chairwoman Tina Muchtisch, were very satisfied with how it went: “Everything went off smoothly and in a disciplined manner.”
