FPÖ triumphs in the Leibnitz district: choice with clear losers and winners

The state elections 2024 in Styria showed a clear direction: the freedom (FPÖ) had achieved a remarkable victory and emerged as the undisputed winner in the Leibnitz district. Of the 941,509 voters in the region, hot discussions about voters and political trends have increased. The Leibnitz district was clearly “colored blue” this year, which indicates the strengthened of the FPÖ.

The FPÖ, under the leadership of Mario Kunasek, achieved incredible election results in many communities. Especially in the traditionally red colored community of Gralla, where it received 46.69 percent of the vote. In Oberhaag, too, the FPÖ can boast 47.23 percent. These results indicate that the voters in the region voted with a clear mandate for changes. In many cases, the FPÖ also celebrated average of 35.4 percent over the Styria kWite.

changes in the political landscape

The ÖVP, on the other hand, experienced severe losses and fell to a disappointing second place with 31.9 percent. These changes within the political landscape also have consequences for the officials: Gerald Holler, a member of the ÖVP, must hand over his mandate due to the poor results. He expressed himself disappointed with the election results and believed that central issues such as inflation and migration were "not implemented accordingly" by the ÖVP.

The party has not only lost the votes, but also on influence in the region. Holler confessed that his mandate was under pressure from the start, especially after the surveys predicted a decline of more than 33 percent for the party. This insight shows how important it is to take the votes seriously and react to it.

The results for the SPÖ, which fell in third place at 17.02 percent, are similarly disappointing. The member of the state parliament Bernadette Kerschler, who was in third place on the state list, must also vacate its place. It is shocked by the election outputs that the SPÖ puts in a difficult situation. Kerschler particularly regrets that the women's quota in politics suffers from these changes and confesses that it no longer expected her place in the state parliament.

It is interesting to observe how the political waves in the region have beaten and what effects the choice on the individual politicians. While the FPO cheers, the other parties have to process the clear message of voters. Cities and municipalities such as St. Johann im Saggautal and Tillmitsch show the changed political landscape in the region.

The state election, which will significantly influence the composition of the Styrian state parliament, promises to redesign the political discourse in the region. Despite the clear election decision, it remains to be seen how the FPÖ will implement its votes obtained and whether the other parties can learn from this election. The voters have decided and given the direction, now it is up to the political supporters to take the requirements and wishes of the citizens seriously.
