Viennese students demand massive relief from housing costs!

In Vienna, students are increasingly having to pay more for their housing costs, with an average cost of 555 euros per month - which corresponds to over 40 percent of their disposable income. These alarming figures come from a current IFES study, which shows that only in Innsbruck are housing costs even higher. Judith Pühringer, the leader of the Vienna Green Party, and her colleague Georg Prack drew attention to the serious situation in a press conference. More and more students, especially in dormitories, are affected by high rents and the associated financial burden, with them having to pay an average of 446 euros for a place in a student dormitory ORF reported.

The Greens also called for urgent changes to reduce housing costs for students. A central concern is the introduction of a housing deposit fund, similar to the models in Graz and Salzburg, which is intended to help students raise the necessary deposits when concluding rental agreements. They also advocated for easier access to social housing and the granting of housing allowances for students. Access to free energy advice and the renovation of student dormitories should make living even more attractive. The exclusion of students from financial support due to strict proof of income is another major problem that requires gender and socially fair solutions to ensure that housing remains affordable regardless of background.
