How a bathtub and a boozy evening made Gabalier a star

A chance evening in which a bathtub and heavy alcohol consumption triggered an unexpected flood of creativity: This is how Andreas Gabalier's most famous lines came about. In a recent conversation, the Austrian pop star explained how his hit “I sing a Liad für di” came about and how it won the hearts of his fans.

The unusual happened in the university district of Graz. Gabalier said on the show “Let’s have fun!” The broadcaster ServusTV revealed that he had around 3.42 per mille of alcohol in his blood. “I couldn’t get the melody of ‘I Don’t Feel Like Dancin’ out of my head back then,” reported the 39-year-old with a smile. On his way home, while making his way to the taxi, he was singing to himself and noticed a girl who heard him and started laughing.

The bathtub as a creative retreat

The story takes a turn when Gabalier went into the bathtub at home. As he himself put it: “The classic thing when you wake up in cold water at seven in the morning.” But at this point the inspiration for the song came to him, and around 4 a.m. “I sing a Liad für di” was born. This song was a huge success and stayed in the German charts for over 88 weeks.

What once began as a spontaneous vocal performance quickly became an integral part of the hit repertoire. The hit is not only very popular with fans, but is now also an integral part of every celebration, be it at parties or folk festivals. Gabalier himself remembers the incredible turning point in his career when the song hit the top of the charts in April 2011.

At almost 40 years old, Gabalier is still going strong on stage. The folk rock'n'roller has established himself as an indispensable part of the music scene and drives his fans to storms of enthusiasm at performances such as the "Beatrice Egli Show". His career shows how great music can emerge from a carefree evening with a touch of unconventionality. More information on this topic can be found at www.tz.de.
