Grazathlon postponed after rampage: new date in memory of the victims

The Grazathlon planned for June 13th and 14th, 2025 has been postponed by one week. The new date for the event is now June 20th and 21st. This step was necessary to take into account the tragic events of the past few days, in particular the shooting rampage in Graz that took place on June 10th. Organizers emphasize treating the situation with respect and doing justice to the dignity of the victims. Three people were killed and over 30 others were injured in the incident, which shocked the entire city. According to Krone, this decision was discussed with all parties involved, including the city of Graz and the state of Styria, to ensure that the Grazathlon can take place within an appropriate framework.

The rampage that began in Zweiglgasse left a wave of horror in its wake. The perpetrator, a 26-year-old Austrian citizen, used his vehicle as a weapon and targeted passers-by. The police later arrested him in Schmiedgasse. At a press conference, Governor Hermann Schützenhöfer and Mayor Siegfried Nagl expressed their concern about the events and the need to thoroughly clarify the course of events. The crisis team was also activated to help those affected and their relatives, as Graz.at reports.

Postponement of the Grazathlon

The postponement of the Grazathlon to June 20th and 21st has an impact on the event format. The junior competition is scheduled to take place on Friday, June 20th, while the main competition is scheduled for Saturday, June 21st. Organizer Andreas Mauerhofer emphasized that the route and the obstacles will remain as originally planned. The authorities support the event, but there are still uncertainties about possible restrictions on the supporting program. According to Kleine Zeitung, the organizers have held intensive discussions with the city and the state in order to accommodate the changes.

The decision to postpone was clearly communicated and is supported by everyone involved. The organizers and the city of Graz thank the participants and supporters for their understanding in this difficult situation. There remains hope that the Grazathlon can take place after these tragic events as a sign of strength and community.
