Bahnhofs mission in Graz: A new place of hope and charity

On Tuesday, the station mission at Graz Central Station was officially reopened, thus marking an important fresh start for the city. This social institution operated by Caritas is the goal of offering people in difficult situations to offer comprehensive support. Mayor Elke Kahr (KPÖ) emphasized in her opening speech how essential this Comeback is for the community.

The station mission, which is located at Europaplatz 12, had already played an important role in the past before being closed in the 1990s. The decision to activate the facility came after a long time, with the city of Graz working together as a carrier and the Caritas as operators. Kahr described this new attempt as a “place of power of charity”, which is supposed to offer people a space to find a stop at difficult times.

comprehensive offer for visitors

The station mission is operated seven days a week and offers numerous services that are both anonymous and free of charge. From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., visitors have the opportunity to wash their laundry, take a shower or withdraw into separate relaxation rooms. At a time when many people suffer from social isolation, a safe retreat is created here.

The offer is already very well received, as Caritas director Nora Tödtling-Musenbichler reports: "We already knew that there was a need. But we never thought that the offer was so well received." During the trial operation in the first few months, a meeting center was established, to which up to 70 people came daily. The focus is on the fact that people not only find a place to rest, but can also draw new strength.

In addition to the basic services, visitors can also receive free meals. There is bread in the morning and in the afternoon, and at noon either a soup or a stew is served. Even in the cold season, the facility offers a way to warm up, while in summer it ensures cooling with air conditioning systems. A successful combination of practical help and a place of encounter.

The reopening of the station mission is a step in a positive direction to support people in precarious situations and to offer them a contact point. This is regarded as a necessary contribution to improving the quality of life of many people in Graz. Further information can be found at www.meinbeinbezirk.at
