Feldkirchen: E-scooter and cycle paths for environmentally friendly mobility
The introduction of e-scooters in Feldkirchen near Graz has turned out to be great success. Since spring, the initiative of Wegfinder and ÖBB has been offering a new way of moving, which is well received by the citizens. Despite a small decline in use in July, the number of users recently rose sharply. This is also supported by the four new rental stations that were put into operation in August. In the third quarter of 2024, the project already recorded 1,502 trips in which the users made a total of 4,347 kilometers. The average driving time is around 9.6 minutes.
The most popular starting point for the trips is the Graz Airport of the S-Bahn, followed by other heavily frequented locations such as the Mozartgasse settlement and the Feldkirchen/Seiersberg train station. Mayor Erich Gosch emphasizes that the e-scooter offer serves above all to bridge the "first and last mile" in order to create a better connection to public transport. "With other stations that we are planning next year, we would like to make our offer even more attractive," he says.
extension of the cycle path network
But the e-scooters represent only part of the mobility initiatives in the region. A significant expansion of the cycle path network is planned in the coming years. Of the 8.5 million euros that were released by the state of Styria in September, a large part will flow into the expansion of this infrastructure. Construction work from Kalsdorf to the Forst Crossing in Feldkirchen is currently taking place, with further focus on premest places next year. The establishment of the Unterflurstrasse along the Koralbahn in Feldkirchen has already been successfully completed.
In addition, various alternative mobility solutions such as e-car sharing are implemented by "Tim" in Feldkirchen in order to offer citizens a wide range of sustainable traffic concerns. This happens not only to relieve traffic, but also with the clear goal of promoting the use of more environmentally friendly means of transport.
recognition for climate protection measures
The efforts to sustainability were recently recognized by the Styrian climate protection program "E5". Feldkirchen first competed for this certification program and received two out of five possible "E". Mayor Gosch is optimistic: "Although we are only at the beginning of the process, we have already achieved a degree of performance of 40 percent. We will continue to take measures to receive three or four, e’ next time. " This award is not only a confirmation of the previous efforts, but also an incentive to further expand the measures and to intensify the goals in this area.
The mobility initiative in Feldkirchen is an important step towards a more environmentally conscious traffic structure. The combination of e-scooters, an extended cycle path network and other sustainable mobility options shows that the region is actively working on a modern transport system.
