Solar energy overtakes coal: EU celebrates record in June 2025!

In June 2025, solar energy in the European Union broke new records and for the first time overtook all other power sources. According to the Think tank Ember, 22.1 % of the electricity used in the EU came from photovoltaic systems. This shows a remarkable progress of renewable energies in the EU, which thus start leaving the traditionally dominating fossil fuels behind. It is particularly striking that in at least 13 of the 27 EU countries, production from solar systems exceeded all other forms of electricity generation, which further strengthened the role of solar energy in European power supply.

The nuclear power generation ranked in second place with a share of 21.8 %, followed by wind power, which contributed 15.8 % to overall power supply. With 14.4 % and hydropower, natural gas fell four and five with 12.8 %. The decline in the coal content is particularly remarkable, which in June was only 6.1 % as low as ever before. Germany and Poland, which were previously stronger coal consumption countries, have recorded significant declines in their coal use. This agrees with the goals of the European Green Deal, which work towards climate neutrality by 2050.

renewable energies on the advance

The efforts to increase the use of renewable energies are important both politically and economically. Even if the proportion of fossil energies remained 23.6 % in June, a decline is evident compared to previous years, although the availability of hydropower was low compared to the previous year. Against this background, an attempt is made to reach the EU goals with regard to renewable energies in the medium term, which have recently been raised from 32 % to 42.5 % by 2030. These efforts are part of the more extensive measures to reduce the dependency on fossil fuels and to reduce pollution.

In the context of these developments, it is important to look at the different types of renewable energies. These include wind, solar and hydropower as well as geothermal energy, biomass and biofuels. With these diverse technologies, the EU strives to increase the use of renewable energies and to minimize the operational challenges.

outlook and perspectives

The targets of the European Parliament for Renewable Energies are clear: A legal obligation to attach solar systems and the expansion of offshore wind energy are to be promoted by 2030. In addition, specific sector shops are to be planned, including the ambition, 42 % hydrogen from renewable sources by 2030. The potential of this policy is already evident in the increasing production of solar power that has broken records in several countries.

Integrated plans such as the RepowerUu plan to accelerate the energy transition after the Ukraine conflict will help to further network the European energy infrastructure. These milestones are crucial to achieve the long -term climate goals of the EU.

In summary, it can be said that the success of solar energy in June 2025 not only marks a turning point in the generation of electricity of the EU, but also illustrate the potential of renewable energies. With the progress of political requirements, Europe could soon be on an even more sustainable path of energy supply.
