Severe storm warnings for Italy's dream destinations: That's how dangerous it gets!
Italy is once again under the influence of severe storms after the Italian Civil Defense issued a weather warning on Tuesday, May 20, 2025. The yellow warning level applies to several regions, including Piedmont, Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna as well as the entire Liguria area and large parts of Tuscany and Umbria. These popular holiday destinations are facing unstable weather caused by a low pressure system positioned over the Iberian Peninsula. The Kulturportal Wien reports that strong thunderstorms, heavy rain, strong lightning activity, hail and gusts of wind can be expected in the central and northern regions of Italy from the early hours of the morning.
The latest severe weather events were exacerbated by Cyclone “Ines”, which caused damage last week, particularly in the south of Italy, especially Sicily. Schools in cities such as Catania, Syracuse, Agrigento and Ragusa were closed until further notice, while parks and sports facilities also remained closed. Many regions in Italy are currently under a red weather warning and the population is urged to follow the authorities' instructions to ensure safety. Weather services predict that the situation will ease from Saturday onwards as the low pressure area loses strength and the rains could ease, as Weekend reports.
Current weather conditions and recommendations
Further challenges are expected in the affected regions. In Liguria in particular, severe storm surges could occur from midnight. The population is encouraged to avoid unnecessary journeys and to find out about the current situation. Civil Defense has updated alert levels and warns of possible local flooding and increased risk of avalanches, especially in the mountains of Piedmont and Aosta Valley. In Piedmont, debris flows and landslides are expected in Novara and Vercelli in the northwest. An increase in the levels of smaller tributaries of the Po is expected in some areas, with the flood mark being exceeded in Turin, as 20 minutes reports.
The authorities are calling on everyone affected to take protective measures and follow the rules of conduct. Special advice has been published for the municipality of Pirri, recommending avoiding cellars and staying in protected areas, as flooded streets are expected. Despite the rarity of tropical storms in Italy, this weather pattern is a strong indication of the possibility of sudden and violent weather phenomena in spring.
The situation remains dynamic and the affected regions continue to be closely monitored. Civil Defense updates weather warnings and regularly shares important information about safety protocols. Travelers and locals are urged to exercise caution and prepare for possible further severe weather.
