Terrible accident on the A2: truck crashes into coach – 37 injured!

On Wednesday, April 23, 2025, a serious accident occurred on the A2 motorway in the direction of Dortmund, near the Hannover-Buchholz junction. A 40-ton truck collided in slow traffic with a coach carrying several dozen passengers. A total of 37 people were affected in this incident, including two seriously and four slightly injured.

The rescue measures took place immediately. The highway was completely closed while the injured were treated. The emergency services were quickly on site to transport the injured to nearby clinics. Other affected people were able to be accommodated in a nearby shopping center, where they were cared for until the onward journey was organized. Around 35 fire and rescue services were deployed, including two senior emergency doctors, several special vehicles and a rescue transport helicopter.

Rescue measures and emergency services

After the rescue work was completed, the scene was handed over to the police, who began investigating and recovering the vehicles involved in the accident. The immediate response of the emergency services made a decisive contribution to bringing the situation under control and providing the injured people with the necessary medical care. The frightening number of injuries once again sheds light on the dangers of road traffic.

According to current traffic accident statistics in the EU, thousands of people lose their lives or are seriously injured in traffic accidents every year. Between 2010 and 2020, the number of road traffic deaths in Europe fell by 36 percent, which shows positive developments but also highlights the serious consequences of such accidents. In 2019 there were 22,800 traffic deaths, while the number reduced by 4,000 in 2020.

Safety situation in road traffic

Preliminary figures suggest that 18 EU member states are recording the lowest number of deaths in history. What's interesting is that Sweden has the safest roads with only 18 traffic fatalities per 1 million inhabitants, while Romania has the highest with a rate of 85 traffic fatalities per 1 million inhabitants. On average in the EU the figures are 42 per 1 million inhabitants; on a global scale it is even over 180 per 1 million.

The proportion of young people among traffic fatalities is particularly alarming. 12 percent of those who died in 2018 were between 18 and 24 years old, even though this age group only makes up 8 percent of the population. However, one bright spot is the 43 percent reduction in this age group since 2010. Despite these positive developments, road safety remains a key issue that requires attention.

The tragic accident in Hanover shows once again how quickly serious incidents can occur in road traffic. Today's figures and developments in various European countries also illustrate how important preventative measures and road safety are in order to avoid such accidents.
