Truck fire on Walserberg: 200 liters of diesel in channel flowed
on Tuesday evening, in the immediate vicinity of the Walserberg border crossing in the Salzburg area district, there was a dramatic incident. A truck was in full fire and caused worrying situations because his cargo was explosive.
The fire brigade was immediately alerted after a passer -by discovered the fire. When the emergency services arrived, the cab was already in full flames. In order to control the flames, 40 firefighters were deployed who had to wear heavy respiratory protection devices. When containing the fire, they use two steel pipes to quickly extinguish the fire, as the Wals-Siezenheim volunteer fire brigade reported.
explosion risk from aluminum oxide
The truck was loaded with 24 tons of aluminum oxide. It is important to know that this material is not flammable in the solid state, but can become explosive in the formation of dust. Fortunately, the flames could be spread to the cargo.
Another aspect of fire fighting was the damaged fuel lines of the truck, which led to diesel. Since the situation took place on a slightly sloping area, around 200 liters of diesel ran into a channel. The fire brigade quickly acted and tied the diesel, while the channel was rinsed at the same time to avoid environmental damage.
The vehicle driver was no longer in the vehicle at the time of the incident. This could indicate timely escape that prevented worse.
Fortunately, the partly chaotic scenes on the side of the path remained without major damage to people or environmental. The fire brigade emphasized that despite the difficult conditions, the fire could be successfully deleted.
