Vandalism in Walding: Young people show remorse after sprayer attack
In the Urfahr-Umgebung, vandistic graffiti of young people causes excitement. Recent incidents, including spraying public buildings with football sayings, show that youthful high spirits are often behind such acts. Before this year's Hallowea night, the convicted young people registered with the local parish and the police and apparently show remorse. Nevertheless, the financial damage remains significant.
Mayor Johann Plakolm von Walding has previously experienced similar vandalism cases. In a Facebook post, he described his personal experiences with two sprayers, which he invited to a clarifying conversation together with their parents. Plakolm offered the parents to have young people performed by social services for their damage. However, he was disappointed when this alternative solution was considered exaggerated and rejected.
a problem for society as a whole?
amazed at the reaction of a father who only asked for the invoice, Plakolm notes that a deeper social problem is obvious here. In such incidents, the mayor not only sees individual cases, but a general development that is worrying.
In Linz, however, a kind of “sprayer war” rages between the fan camps of the football clubs Lask Linz and Blau-Weiß Linz. This rivalry also leaves its traces in the surrounding communities, such as in Gallneukirchen, where the new Gusenbrücke was defaced with sayings. Mayor Sepp Wall-Strasser is relieved that it is currently calmer, which he partly attributes to the activities of the "social initiative", who works with young people on the design of public spaces.
Thomas Wolfesberger, Mayor of Bad Leonfelden, confirmed that the risk of vandalism was more serious a year or two. Here, too, buildings had to be cleaned after they had been sprayed. However, new graffiti incidents such as that of the buskeeper in Linzerstrasse are actively opposed.
The fears of the communities are understandable, because despite individual success in prevention, vandalism remains a persistent problem that demands continuous effort. From conversations with affected families to the integration of social projects - the municipal administrations try to find approaches to prevent further spreading of this form of vandalism.
These discussions and efforts are in the context of a larger debate about responsibility and upbringing in society. As Mayor Plakolm notes, parents and young people have to learn again to take responsibility for their actions and accept the consequences. In the future, it will be shown whether the current wave of vandalism is actually a short-term appearance or is a serious challenge.
