New deposit system: 80% of the bottles should come back!

Oberösterreich, Österreich - Austria has introduced a new deposit system for disposable packaging that has been in effect since the beginning of the year. From now on, the deposit is 25 cents for a plastic bottle or an aluminum can. However, this deposit can only be seen on bottles and doses marked with the new deposit icon. So far there are still many stocks from the previous year in circulation, which means that the new models on the shelves of the supermarkets are still in the minority, as orf.at reports. In Upper Austria, estimated 140,000 deposit bottles and doses were brought back. Overall, more than a million have already been returned throughout Austria, while the whole year is classified as a transition year. The aim is that around 80 percent of the returns are successfully processed by the end of the year.

efficient return processes ensure order

The sales outlets that sell disposable packaging with the Pfandlogo are legally obliged to take them back. Several shops can set up a joint return point in particular at high -frequency places such as shopping centers, train stations and airports. However, this area must be in the immediate vicinity of the sales outlets. The return can be done either manually or via return machines. In the manual withdrawal, sales outlets may only accept the beverage packaging in the usual sales variables, which is the case in bakeries, for example, such as Austria.gv.at .

For the coming year, the system is expected that the system will then have been fully started and plans to withdraw more than two billion bottles and doses. This comprehensive return system should not only contribute to cleaning the environment, but also raise awareness of recycling and reuse of materials in the population.
