New garbage system 2025: Upper Austrians have to rethink!

From January 1, 2025, the Upper Austrians must fundamentally change their waste separation. According to meinzirk.at , metal and plastic packaging must then no longer be brought to the waste collection centers (ASZ), but must be put in the yellow sack. Common packaging such as PET bottles and beverage cans for which a deposit system is introduced are particularly affected. The return takes place via the retail trade, which broken packaging does not have to withdraw. This means a drastic change for many households that now have to adapt to the new rules.

new pledge system and packaging rules

With this new system, all beverage packaging that is integrated into the pledge system is clearly marked. In addition, plastic hollow bodies under five liters, such as cosmetic bottles and cleaning agents, can no longer be released in the ASZ and must be in the yellow sack. According to ikb.at , consumers are to be better informed by a transition phase, which has not yet been precisely determined. During this time it is expected that the citizens are slowly getting used to the necessary changes.

glass packaging remains to be disposed of in the existing containers as usual, while paper and box belong to the old paper bin, provided they are clean and uncertainty. In order to support the recycling activities in Upper Austria, a more detailed guide is provided that helps the citizens to understand the new separation rules.
