From January 1, 2025, Upper Austrians will have to fundamentally change the way they separate waste. Common packaging such as PET bottles and beverage cans, for which a deposit system is being introduced, are particularly affected. Returns are made via retailers, who do not have to take back broken packaging. This means a drastic change for many households who will now have to adapt to the new rules.
New deposit system and packaging rules
With this new system, all beverage packaging that is integrated into the deposit system will be clearly marked. In addition, hollow plastic items under five liters, such as cosmetic bottles and cleaning products, are no longer allowed to be handed in at the ASZ and must be placed in the yellow bag. Glass packaging must still be disposed of as usual in the existing containers, while paper and cardboard belong in the waste paper bin, provided they are clean and uncoated.
