Project KuM: Community togetherness for seniors in Kirchberg-Thening

A remarkable project was launched in Kirchberg-Thening on October 19th to strengthen cohesion in the community. An agenda café was organized under the title “Caring for Togetherness” (KuM), where interested and committed people gathered to take the first step towards a more active community.

A total of twelve women and men are involved in this initiative, which emerged from the municipality's Agenda.Zukunft process. A central goal of KuM is to set up a visiting service for older people who often suffer from loneliness. Brigitta Michetschläger, one of the driving forces behind the project, explains: "It's important to me that older people can take part in our community. We want to take action to achieve this."

Involvement of older citizens

The planned program involves volunteers visiting older residents on a regular basis. These visits are intended to be an enriching time for the seniors where they can chat, read aloud or just take a walk. The initiative is supported by the Red Cross organization and carried out together with the Healthy Community of Kirchberg-Thening. This also provides relief for caring relatives.

Another aspect of the project is the planned training series, which starts in November. This is specifically aimed at the topics “Care starts with myself” and “Seniors at the center”. The training courses are intended to provide all helpers with the necessary skills and knowledge to become active at KuM. Brigitta Michetschläger also invites you to welcome other interested citizens: “There are still places available for additional helpers at KuM.”

Mayor Peter Michael Breitenauer is pleased with the support for the KuM initiative and emphasizes that it is important to work together to master the challenges of demographic change. "As a community, we are incredibly happy about the KuM initiative and support it across party lines. Because only together can we overcome the challenges of demographic change in the community," said Breitenauer.

The KuM project not only offers help and social support for the older citizens of Kirchberg-Thening, but also promotes exchange between generations. It's a step in the right direction to bring the community closer together and combat loneliness.
