Transport bans in Leonding: residents decide on traffic safety

As part of a test, passages have been introduced in Leonding in recent months to check traffic safety and noise reduction in several residential areas. On October 20, the residents now had the opportunity to vote on the permanent introduction of these locks. Around 4,000 residents were called up, but only 1,356 people took part in the vote, which means a turnout of around 36.7 percent.

The vote showed different opinions in the streets concerned. While in the neighborhood "Am Südgarten" 60 percent of the participants (a total of 150 people from 75 percent of the electorate) voted for the retention of the passage lock, 54 percent of the respondents in Herderstrasse and Georg-Erber-Straße rejected the lock. Here the participation was only 37 percent, which makes the discrepancy between the two areas clear.

The opinions could not be more different. In “Am Südgarten”, the residents perceived the positive changes due to the barriers, which is reflected in the results. In contrast to this, the residents of Herderstraße and Georg-Erber-Straße expressed themselves skeptical and mostly spoke out against the lock. This different perception raises questions about the specific circumstances and needs of the different areas.

The situation on Herderstrasse and Georg-Erber-Straße looks very different. Here, 629 residents, i.e. 54 percent, spoke out against the passage lock. The progress in the administrative processes of the city have enabled citizens to express their voice through personal coordination and by votes given in advance in the district office. This flexibility was important to make participation easier for all residents.

further steps of the city of Leonding

On October 21, the provisional locks will be removed on Herderstrasse and Georg-Erber-Straße. In contrast, the lock in the "Am Südgarten" area remains due to the positive feedback from the residents. However, the final decision is made by the municipal council, which will advise on the next steps at his meeting on November 7th. The city already indicated that many council members are inclined to follow the wishes of the residents, as the results of the vote show.

"We are happy that we decided to the test run of the locks and that the residents were able to experience how the noise situation and traffic safety in their residential area changes with locks," said Mayor Sabine Naderer-Jelinek and traffic city councilor Armin Brunner. These positive feedback could be important for future traffic calming projects in the city.

The decision on the passengers not only has an immediate impact on traffic management, but also on the future planning of measures to improve the quality of life in the different districts. Even if there are differences in the acceptance of the measures, the survey shows that there is a certain awareness of the needs of the residents.
