Grieskirchen honors Sister Elisabeth with honorary citizenship on the anniversary

GRIES CHURCHES.In a warm ceremony, Sister Elisabeth Mayr received honorary citizenship of the city of Grieskirchen. This highest award was presented to her on the occasion of her Golden Profession Jubilee. Sister Elisabeth, who ran the Borromean Sisters' kindergarten at Roßmarkt for decades, is being honored for her outstanding commitment to the community.

The celebration took place in the Grieskirchen parish church, where many guests came together to celebrate this special moment. In her laudatory speech, Mayor Maria Pachner emphasized the extraordinary contribution of Sister Elisabeth, who has been part of the community since 1980 and has lovingly accompanied over 3,000 children during this time. A creative thank you in the form of a colorful drawing with a rainbow and a poem from the children underlined the appreciation for their work.

A life's work to honor

“Every child is a gift from God,” is a well-known quote from Sister Elisabeth that underlines the basis of her work. Their decades of dedication and loving care shaped the children and their families. The mayor highlighted what Sister Elisabeth has done for the values and support of the smallest members of our society.

However, the award is not just a sign of personal appreciation for Sister Elisabeth. It also represents an appreciation of the entire community of Borromean women, who have been active in social service in Grieskirchen for 158 years. Their work extends far beyond the boundaries of the kindergarten. Sister Elisabeth was involved in the parish, with altar boys and in preparing for first communion and confirmation. She even founded a children's prayer group to promote faith and community among the youngest.

This year Sister Elisabeth also celebrated her 70th birthday. After this honor, she will move to the parent company in Vienna, where new tasks await her. The Order of the Borromean Sisters, which was founded in 1652, is known for its extensive activities in geriatric and nursing care as well as in education through kindergartens and schools. Management of the kindergarten will now be transferred to the Association for Franciscan Education in the fall, ushering in a new phase for the facility.

At the same ceremony, Sister Raffaela also received her Golden Jubilee, showing that this community of sisters remains an important part of the social fabric in the region.
