Austria's energy transition: Experts are calling for open space PV for 2030 goals
In recent years, the topic of the energy transition in Austria has developed strongly. Experts in particular emphasize the need to expand renewable energies in order to achieve the climate goals. Hubert Fechner, the chairman of the technology platform Photovoltaics, clearly showed in a recent study that Austria could get considerable difficulties without the targeted expansion of open-air photovoltaics (open space PV) in order to meet its energy policy requirements.
The country's climate goals are impressive: by 2030, the expansion of photovoltaic energy is to increase by up to 21 terawatt hours (TWH). However, this goal seems ambitious if one takes into account that the potential for the use of solar energy on existing buildings and infrastructures will not be sufficient. Fechner is concerned: "The available areas on roofs and other infrastructures are by no means sufficient to achieve these goals."
The call for the use of open spaces
Fechner emphasizes that the implementation of open space PV is essential. These systems can generate large amounts of solar energy, since they can be installed on unused areas such as meadows or fallow land without affecting the use of existing buildings. This type of energy generation could play a central role in fulfilling the high demands on energy production in the country.
In addition to the ecological advantages, the expansion of open space PV could also offer economic opportunities. By creating new jobs in the solar industry, local economies can benefit from these investments. The entire sector is transformed when the correct steps are taken to expand the infrastructure for renewable energies.
However, the challenges should not be underestimated. It will be necessary to mobilize political support and possibly also create legal framework conditions that facilitate the expansion of the open space PV. Fechner therefore calls for a joint approach of politics, business and society.
The discussion about the expansion of the open space photovoltaics is part of a greater dialogue about the sustainability and the future of energy supply in Austria. In view of the urgent questions of climate change, it is in the interest of all of all innovative solutions and promoting the use of solar energy in order to actually achieve the desired climate goals. This is an important time for the energy transition, which is characterized by commitment and creativity.
