Information evening in Weibern: Citizens' initiative warns against landfilling of building waste

In Weibern there is resistance to the planned landfill and building material recycling plant that is to be built in Lasselau. A citizens' initiative called “Livable Future Aistersheim-Weibern” has been formed to combat this project. Many residents fear significant negative impacts on their living environment, ranging from groundwater contamination to increased heavy traffic.

In July there was a protest march in Weibern, in which many citizens from the region took part. This escalation shows how much concern there is among the population. Residents fear that the proposed landfill could affect air quality, especially since pollutants and dust can be blown away by the wind.

Approval information

The plans for the landfill are still in the review phase. The responsible company took soil samples to determine whether the site was suitable for the project. Aistersheim's mayor Johann Stockinger is certain: "The soil samples will not stand in the way of the project. The project application should be submitted in autumn next year," said Stockinger. However, the process is dragging on, which is frustrating for citizens as they have hardly been informed of precise details.

Interested citizens will have to wait until spring or summer 2025 to find out more about the exact plans. Mayor Stockinger is skeptical and says: “In principle, things are going to be pretty tight for us.” A possible hope could be that objections are raised during the facility approval process, particularly with regard to nature conservation or water rights.

Information evening for enlightenment

The citizens' initiative focuses on education and organized an information evening on November 22nd. This takes place in the Wiwari and starts at 8 p.m. Herman Anzengruber, the chairman of the initiative, explains: "We tried to talk to all parties in the state government. But everyone says that if all guidelines are followed, they can't do anything." So far, around 2,500 people have signed the petition against the project.

Admission to the information event is on a voluntary donation basis, with the net proceeds from the event intended to cover the costs of preventing landfill sites. The initiative is committed to informing the public about the potential risks and challenges that could arise from the proposed landfill and recycling facility.
