Future of health care: closures and reforms in Lower Austria

The challenges in the Lower Austrian health system cannot be denied. A severe decline in staff, together with an aging population, forced those responsible to look for new solutions. An expert group has now put suggestions on the table in order not only to increase efficiency, but also to ensure the quality of health care. This information was summarized in a document that is available to the ORF and was published by the "Kronen Zeitung".

The aim of these suggestions is to use the resources in such a way that health care remains at a high level without the personnel and financial framework being lost out of sight. In order to reduce waiting times and relieve the staff, a revision of the structures of the hospital system is recommended.

closures of clinics planned

In other clinics, acute care should be eliminated, instead they could be converted into special facilities. This applies, among other things, the clinics in Melk, Klosterneuburg, Gmünd and Waidhofen on the Thaya. These measures are intended to enable targeted specialization that meets the actual demand in the health system.

The State Health Agency (LGA) emphasizes that the measures are considerations that have not yet been decided. "We have high expectations of the Lower Austrian health pact in order to be able to offer even better care with the existing staff," reported a spokesman for the LGA at the request of ZIB2.

The Lower Austrian state government also emphasizes that no final decisions have been made at this point. However, one has already been confronted with a lack of staff in some departments. The results of the health package should help to make the system future -proof and to master the challenges in healthcare.

According to information from the ZIB2 report, a final decision will be made at the beginning of next year about which clinics are closed.
