Streets in Melk: Municipal council demands more transparency in finances
In Melk, the defective street infrastructure causes resentment among citizens. The SPÖ councilor Leopold Emminger has now put the problem in the foreground. It is no secret that many Melker streets are in poor condition, which always gives rise to complaint. In this context, Emminger has made it clear that it is incomprehensible that despite considerable income from radar penalties and parking fees, which are estimated to be around 700,000 euros annually, there are no means of renovating the streets.
"If I have a road problem, I always hear that there is no money. But it has to be there, since the money of the radar penalties and the income from the parking fee is actually tied to," said Emminger. In his opinion, the income should not be used to stuff other budget holes, but specifically flow into the improvement of the streets.
political reactions
The criticism of Emminger did not unnoticed in the political arena. Vice Mayor Kaufmann spoke up and rejected the accusation. He argued that the difficult financial situation of the city could not simply be reduced to the income from radar penalties. According to the merchant, there are many expenses that must also be taken into account, which the decision -makers in the city administration would like to face major challenges.
This argument is not only a political back and forth, but also directly affects the quality of living of the Melker population. Refurbishment work is already being carried out in Abt-Karl-Straße, but many residents require more comprehensive measures. These should not only take into account the main roads, but also side streets and footpaths.
The pressure on the city administration grows to tackle the infrastructural defects, especially with regard to the upcoming elections. Citizens expect their elected representatives to work to improve the quality of life in Melk.
Emminger's statements and merchant reactions are the last expression of a major problem in the city administration, which has to be solved in order to make Melk a place worth living in for everyone. The discussion about the condition of the streets will certainly remain a central point in the political debate in the coming weeks and months. Details on this topic are on www.noen.at to read.
