The focus: Conference decides to take measures against illegal puppy trade
The discussion about animal welfare in Austria is picking up. At a conference of animal welfare officers in Krems, central issues were discussed that affect animal husbandry practices in the country. State Councilor Susanne Rosenkranz (FPÖ) emphasized how important it is, like a society with its weakest members, the animals. She said that the illegal puppy trade, which was identified as a serious problem, requires a nationwide information campaign.
According to the rosary, around 30,000 illegal puppy offers are discovered on the Internet every day. The problem is exacerbated primarily by criminal networks, often from the east of Europe. "The money that is spent on these illegal business is not only for the animals themselves, but also for the future pet owners who often have to bear high veterinary costs," she warned. Official breeders offer their puppies between 1,000 and 1,200 euros, while illegal breeders with prices from 200 to 300 euros.
tightening of animal transport regulations required
Another focus of the conference was the criticism of long -distance transports of living animals. Rosenkranz emphasized that these practices are not only ethically questionable, but also unsustainable from an economic point of view. "We have to urge that such transports will be completely banned in the future," she said, pointing out a recently entered into force that contains positive approaches, but requires continuous observation.
In order to strengthen animal welfare, it was also suggested to revise legal regulations to animal keeping bans. The public prosecutor should be able to act faster if there are complaints. According to the rosary, current procedures can take months without changing the living conditions of the animals.
Enlightenment campaign for the castration obligation of cats
Another important point at the conference was the continuous implementation of the castration obligation for cats. Although there are legal regulations, this regulation is not sufficiently taken into account, especially in rural areas, often also in large farms. Rosenkranz called for a sensitization campaign to change this.
The situation of animals after the death of their owners is also an issue that needs to be improved. It is important that animals are not simply deported to the shelter, but that there are reasonable regulations in inheritance law to secure their future.
