Sensational find: Stone Age mammoth hunters discovered in Langmannersdorf!
In an exciting archaeological find in Langmannersdorf, Lower Austria, scientists from the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) discovered remains of at least five mammoths that lived 25,000 years ago. During the excavations near St. Pölten, the researchers found not only mammoth bones, but also numerous stone tools that provide information about the way of life and hunting techniques of the people of that time. These finds are particularly significant because they provide new insights into human-mammoth interactions during the last ice age, such as krone.at reported.
The excavations, which now represent the youngest mammoth sites in Central Europe, have uncovered two zones that contain bones in several layers on top of each other. Complete and dismantled tusks were even found in one of these zones, suggesting that people here valued ivory, possibly for making spearheads. The sites also show signs of early settlements, including fireplaces. According to Marc Handel, the lead archaeologist, the arrangement of the bones shows organized processing of the mammoths, suggesting a well-developed hunting culture, so idw-online.de.
A window into the past
The researchers explain that the mammoths in the Perschlingtal were used as a migration and grazing area. “There was obviously an ideal spot to target the mammoths,” Handel explained. These discoveries shed new light on what hunters of the time knew about animal migration. In addition to the fossilized remains, all finds are now stored in the research institute in Krems for further scientific investigations and will later be transferred to the Natural History Museum in Vienna. Some of the finds will also be shown in the Perschling local history museum in order to make the history of this fascinating era tangible.
