Workshop in Retz: Focus on heat protection for people in need of care

In recent years, the increase in heat waves in Europe has assumed. People in need of care are particularly affected who take serious health risks at high temperatures. The summer of 2023 has broken heat records again, and in Retz the number of heat days on which the temperatures rise above 30 ° C has almost quadrupled since 1990. This has led to the need for protective measures for the most vulnerable members of our society.

To take this topic into account, a special workshop entitled "Heat protection in nursing" took place in the nursing and care center (PBZ) Retz. Organized by the Retzer Land climate model region in cooperation with the PBZ Retz, this workshop aimed to convey nursing staff, relatives and affected practical methods to reduce the consequences of extreme heat.

understanding of the dangers of the heat

Martina Kuttig, deputy head of the Demenz research and nursing science at the Donau University Krems, explained why older people are particularly at risk. Factors such as cardiovascular diseases, bedding and dementia increase the risk of health problems at high temperatures. In addition, many of these people have a reduced feeling of thirst, which increases the risk of dangerous dehydration.

sleep is particularly important for recovery, but the hot nights that rob the restless sleep, prevent sufficient relaxation for the already weakened bodies. Kuttig emphasized the need to take suitable measures to avoid these dangerous conditions.

innovative approaches to relief

Gregor Danzinger, manager of the climate model region, pointed out that the noticeable consequences of climate change affect us all and that we should offer the weakest in society. He explained that air conditioning systems offer a possibility, but should not be the first choice due to their high energy consumption and the lovely dry air.

The commercial director of the PBZ Retz, Horst Winkler, MBA, was creative and developed ideas to improve the situation in the facility. He expressed the proposal to offer a special "Hitzemenü" for the residents in 2025. Fogel showers on the terraces could also cause refreshing cooling. Furthermore, he sees potential in nursing automation, for example a "speaking mirror" could help to regularly remember the necessary fluid intake.

The implementation of these ideas is still being checked, but the initiatives already show the commitment to improve the well -being of the older generation under the challenges of climate change. Details on this important topic can also in a report on www.meinbezirk.at can be read.
