Road safety in the Gänserndorf district: distraction remains the main problem
In the Gänserndorf district, traffic safety is an urgent topic. In the past two years there has been an alarming number of 399 traffic accidents that violated 518 people. Chief inspector Karl Löffler from the district police command speaks openly about the causes of these accidents and gives tips on how to reduce the risk.
A central problem is distraction while driving. Despite the introduced hands -free system, many drivers continue to use their cell phone. In 2023 alone, 742 organ mandates were issued for cell phone violations, and in August 2024 91 criminal tickets were distributed. This shows that the challenge of concentrating on the street is still great.
key causes for traffic accidents
After distraction, the notification of the priority is the second most common reason for traffic accidents. Excessive speed ranks in third place. This year, 36 accidents have already been attributed to the lawn by the end of September, which is a slight decline compared to the previous year. It is striking that most accidents do not happen on weekends, but during the week, especially between Wednesday 3 and 6 p.m. "In 2024 we had the most incidents in the district with 52 accidents!" Said Löffler. These times often fall into rush hour traffic and show that increased vigilance is also necessary here.
A pleasant trend is the relatively low number of 27 accidents under the influence of alcohol in 2023, but drug abuse at the wheel remains a serious problem. Young drivers between the ages of 18 and 30 are particularly affected. In order to counteract this, the police regularly carry out focus controls. Despite the measures, they still come across many drivers who show risky behavior.
The police are also on the road with radar devices to punish speeding. These flash units help to increase the awareness of the drivers for speed limits, even if some may be annoyed.
new measures to improve traffic safety
A new measure to increase security was the construction of circular reversals, such as south of Ollersdorf at the intersection of the state roads L 9/L3027. Around 3,000 vehicles run here every day, which in the past often led to dangerous situations. The reopening of the roundabout in July is intended to help reduce the number of accidents at this hub.
Chief Inspector Löffler urgently appeals to the drivers: "I urgently call on the population to use hands -free facilities and not be distracted. In view of the growing volume of traffic, it is more important than ever to focus on the street!
The information about traffic safety and current numbers underline the need to ensure permanent vigilance and compliance with traffic rules. More details about the current measures and their effects are in a detailed report www.meinbezirk.at to be found.
