Pellendorf bypass: Citizens are fighting for traffic chaos and a lack of financial

In southern Lower Austria, it is bubbling: The planned Pellendorf bypass has been the focus for over ten years. Mayor Wendl describes the current traffic situation as unbearable: every day, up to 12,000 cars and more than 800 trucks are pushing through the village, which is an enormously high load for residents. At the same time, he emphasizes that both communities would benefit twelve faxing and Himberg from building this bypass.

However, the planning did not have it easy. Again and again there were objections, which is why the procedure took a lot of time. It was not until March 2021 that the Administrative Court finally gave the green light, but construction work has not started to date. The lack of money is a crucial inhibition: According to Wendl, the costs for the bypass amount to around 42 million euros.

objections and political entanglements

In order to get the necessary budget, Wendl has already had talks with the Udo Landbauer (FPÖ) transport council, who is positive about the project. But the mayor is disappointed because the project is not planned in the medium -term budget of the country. "We seem to have become a game ball between Finance State Councilor Ludwig Schleritzko and Landbauer," said Wendl in an interview.

The situation could soon be worsening: the SPÖ is planning to carry out a total lock of Schwechater Straße on December 12th to show their displeasure with developments. "We want to draw attention to our worries once again," explains Wendl and announces that the citizens will stand up for their concerns.

The ÖVP, on the other hand, reacts to the announcement of the SPÖ with shaking heads. Community chairwoman Vera Sares notes that the property cancellations are already in full swing. The project had already been planned according to its party colleague Ludwig Schleritzko. In their opinion, however, the mayor is not very committed to it. "Such campaign activities, such as the staged SPÖ demo, do not bring us further," criticizes Sares. In her view, this political theater not only harms the trust in politics, but also the citizens concerned in Himberg, Pellendorf and Velm.

What remains now is the uncertain waiting period for a solution, while the residents continue to suffer from booming traffic. The discussion about the Pellendorf bypass clearly shows how well -acted political tensions can become in the course of infrastructure projects, the implementation of which is necessary for citizens.
