Mourning for Arnulf Rainer: Lower Austria loses its master of art
Arnulf Rainer, the internationally renowned Austrian artist, has died at the age of 96. His death was announced on Thursday in Upper Austria and confirmed by the Arnulf Rainer Museum in Baden near Vienna. Rainer was born on December 8, 1929 in Baden and is considered a master of overpainting, with his work having a decisive influence on the art of the 20th century. In response to his death, the state of Lower Austria expressed great sadness. State Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner was deeply affected and praised Rainer as an exceptional artist who had a significant influence on contemporary art.
Rainer was a self-taught artist who left two art schools after a short time. In the 1970s he was a participant in documenta 6 and represented Austria at the Venice Biennale. His works are known for painting over death masks and photographs of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Ralph Gleis, director of the Albertina in Vienna, described him as one of the most important Austrian artists and highlighted his ability to express emotions and intensity through abstract forms.
The Arnulf Rainer Museum
