ÖVP remains the strongest force: City council election 2025 brings clear majorities!
In the local council elections in Lower Austria last Sunday, the ÖVP defended its dominant position despite losses. With 47 percent of the votes, the People's Party remained the strongest force, but had to accept a decrease of 5.9 percentage points. The SPÖ followed with 26.4 percent and also recorded a slight decline in 1.3 percentage points, while the FPÖ was able to go on to 13 percent with an increase of 7.3 percentage points, such as Noen reported .
A total of 1.307 million citizens were entitled to vote in this election and were able to vote in 568 municipalities. An important feature of this choice was the possibility of awarding up to five preferential votes, but all of which had to be assigned to the same party, said Landtag President Karl Wilfing from the ÖVP. This regulation ensured an exciting turn in the election results, since the ÖVP experienced a dramatic decline from 17.2 percentage points to 24.2 percent in social hotspots such as Baden, such as MeinDeiter reported .
election events and allocation of mandate
The municipality of Laxenburg caused a stir at the constituent session, where the wealth was clearly demolished: the ÖVP achieved 17 mandates, the SPÖ was only able to secure 2 mandates, and the Greens and the FPÖ each achieved one. This clear distribution of the mandates is particularly remarkable because it underlines the political balance of power. A total of 11,821 mandates were distributed by 1,940 parties in this election.
There were special election victories for the SPÖ in Enzenreith and Klein-Neusiedl, where the party achieved over 85 percent with impressive results. This shows that despite general declines in urban centers, the SPÖ experiences a "run", so to speak, in certain areas. The FPÖ also took the opportunity and won the majority in three municipalities, whereby Enzersdorf an der Fischa was considered 35.7 percent.
