New book reveals the history of the Langmatt: A look behind the scenes

In Baden, a new book causes a stir, which documents the impressive history of the Langmatt museum. Under the title "The Magical Langmatt - An Unusual Museum History", the publication illuminates the intensive past of the museum, which has developed in a historical villa for the collection of impressionist art.

Markus Stegmann, the museum director, wrote the 224-page publication, which was published at Berlin Verlag Hatje Cantz. With 100 illustrations, it offers deep insight into the eventful history of the Langmatt. "We want to give readers the opportunity to look behind the scenes and to discover the different facets of our history," explains Stegmann.

important events and renovation

The fact that the “New York Times” recently dedicated an entire page to the museum were particularly noteworthy. The reason for this was the controversial sale of three works by Paul Cézanne, which was considered the last measure to save the museum. This necessary decision was made in order to be able to guarantee a sustainable future of the Langmatt, since the financial resources of the foundation management were strongly tense.

The possibilities for the renovation of the historical building also owes the Langmatt to the population of Baden, which in the summer of 2023 voted in a referendum with an overwhelming CHF 79.25 for a contribution of CHF 10 million. These measures are a reason why the museum can now be extensively renovated.

In the book, experts and contemporary witnesses take a position on developments in the Langmatt. For example, readers can learn exciting things about the testament of John A. Brown or the strategic planning that was necessary to successfully design the coordination for the renovation and the sale of pictures. Another central topic is the provision history of the image "Fruits and Ginger pot", which is part of this story.

The cover of the book shows the symbiosis from a historic building, an impressive art collection and a beautiful park. "Our goal is that readers can understand the atmosphere of the place," continued Stegmann.

The book vernissage will take place on Thursday, October 17th, at 7 p.m. in the Baden Historical Museum. In addition to a presentation of the book, Stegmann will enter into a conversation with Daniele Muscionico, cultural journalist and author. Entry to the museum is free from 6 p.m. and a bar is offered. An aperitif will take place after the conversation. Participation is free of charge, but is requested for prior registration.
