Rescuers in emergencies: animal rescues by the fire departments in the Amstetten district
In the Amstetten district, the fire departments can proudly look back on the remarkable rescue operations for animals that took place last year. A large number of animal rescues often presented the emergency services with unexpected challenges. District fire brigade commander Rudolf Katzengruber explained that operations ranged from rescuing deer in distress to dogs that got into tricky situations. Snakes were also found in gardens, which is always an exciting task for the firefighters.
One of the most difficult rescue missions was rescuing cattle that had fallen into manure pits. In these cases, respiratory protection was often necessary to free the animals safely. “It has also happened that we have had to capture entire herds,” added Katzengruber, and it is clear that these missions require not only skill but also creativity.
Thanks to the fire department
On the occasion of World Animal Protection Day, Katzengruber thanked the fire department members for their high-quality operations. "In such emergencies, the members often have to approach the situations with a lot of ingenuity and skill. These operations are not only dangerous for the often wild animals, but also for the emergency services," he said. However, despite the potential risks, most operations last year ended with a satisfactory result.
The fire departments also train regularly to be well prepared for such situations. This is particularly true when dealing with herd animals, such as cattle or sheep, whose rescue requires precision and speed.
An amusing detail that fire brigade spokesman Wolfgang Zarl highlighted was the leadership's closeness to nature. This is reflected not only in the commitment to animal rescue, but also in the special name of the district fire brigade command: “For example, there is the district fire brigade commander Rudolf Katzengruber, his deputy Josef Fuchsberger and the administrator Florian Kammerhuber!” laughed Zarl.
This form of animal help shows how important the fire department in the Amstetten district is not only as a fire protection organization, but also as a lifesaver for animals. The diverse experiences and constant willingness to help emphasize the necessity of such operations and the excellent work of the fire department.
