New elections in Austria: Comack from Kurz or Chaos for the ÖVP?

In a dramatic turning point in Austrian politics, the coalition talks between the conservative ÖVP, the social democratic SPÖ and the liberal Neos have found an abrupt end. This “sugar lamp” was foreseeable from the start, according to Wolfgang Fellner in Austria. After the NEOS explained their exit from the negotiations, the two remaining parties, the SPÖ and ÖVP, are faced with the question of how to proceed. Fellner clearly demands that Nehammer and Babler have to step back and clear the way for new elections so that voters can finally decide who should lead Austria into the future.

After the failure of this triple coalition, there is now speculation about possible new elections in which ex-Chancellor Sebastian Kurz could play the role of the top candidate. As reported by 20 minutes, the political landscape of Austria could change drastically without a recording. Nehammer himself is under pressure and, according to political insiders, no longer has a strong position, while shortly with a return as a chancellor is taken extremely seriously. The dissatisfaction in the ÖVP is growing, and it seems that only briefly offers the opportunities for political renewal with exciting future visions.

A decisive factor is the failure of the previous coalition and the associated political failure that Austria led to a crisis. While the NEOs insisted on more reform will, it was shown that the existing government could not make any progress. The political consultant Thomas Hofer said that Nehammer was “counted” and that the responsibility for the failure is with the SPÖ parts that have not been constructively contributed. With a possible return of Kurz, however, the balance of power in Austrian politics could change fundamentally.
