New Agreement: Balkans and Austria combine DNA data for fighting crime

Österreich - On July 13, 2025, an important agreement on the cross -border cooperation in the fight against crime was ratified in Southeast Europe. This agreement enables future automated comparison of data from suspects across the borders. This is a crucial step because real-time comparison with non-EU countries was not possible before. Technical infrastructures for this data comparison are already available in Austria and are to be introduced gradually in other contracting countries, so the Federal Criminal Police Office 5,837,445 compared to the previous year. An important reason for this decline is the partialization of cannabis, which led to a significant decline in drug crime.

Nevertheless, the statistics also recorded negative tendencies, especially in the area of violent crime, which increase by 1.5 % to 217,277 cases. This value has been the highest level since 2007. In addition, the figures of the suspect children and adolescents and the number of violent crime rose by non -German suspects, which is increasingly discussed in the public discussion. For the first time, PKS 2024 records data on knife attacks that included a total of 29,014 cases, with 54.3 % of these attacks to be assigned to violent crime.

In order to improve the cross-border comparability of crime data, the UNODC (Association of United Nations for Drug and Crime Constitution) contributes to the collection and analysis of crime and criminal justice statistics. The unodc is to provide political information and developed standards for national information to to support the implementation of dark field examinations.

Regular reports on selected crime trends provide extensive analyzes at global and regional level. The UNODC series "Data Matters" offers qualitative research reports that are made available to crucial political actors and the public. This is particularly important for countries that have so far not carried out dark field examinations to get a better picture of the actual crime.
