NEOS start educational revolution: mobile phone ban and de -bureaucratization!
Vienna, Österreich - On April 29, 2025, Neos club chairman Yannick Shetty and education spokeswoman Martina von Künsberg Sarre presented central projects on education policy in Austria. As part of this presentation, an upcoming mobile phone ban was announced in schools, which is due to come into force on May 1, 2025. The measures aim to relieve teachers and to better support students by starting a “de -bureaucratization offensive” that wants to reduce the bureaucracy effort in schools by 80 percent.
Shetty emphasizes the need for these measures and emphasizes that overlooked problems are now to be addressed in the past. In addition to the mobile phone ban, which has already been implemented in several countries, the increase in German funding is also announced to 62 million euros. These initiatives also come to concepts that should make teachers more attractive. This includes, among other things, a practical training and the expansion of the college places for prospective educators.
debate about the mobile phone ban
The planned mobile phone ban in schools is both supported and critically questioned. According to a report by Deutschlandfunk , a ban could only be shifted to the pupils' leisure time. Critics argue that smartphones can also offer valuable benefits in class, for example for research orders or discussions about topics such as cyberbullying.
The Urbilien union (Gew) emphasizes the importance of media education and demands that students are trained in dealing with digital threats and false information. Here, smartphone manufacturers can also be held responsible in order to avoid addictive design, as is already aimed at in Denmark.
educational policy innovations
In addition to the mobile phone ban, the NEOS party plans to introduce a second mandatory kindergarten year and to revise the educational framework plan by summer 2025. A draft law on the orientation classes that are to be introduced outside of Vienna in autumn 2025 will soon go into the assessment.
The educational researchers also campaign to regulate smartphone use in schools. Like a report in The NEOS interpret the election result of the Vienna City Council election as confirmation of their education policy because they were able to achieve an increase of 2.5 percent. Nevertheless, it is emphasized that the complete implementation of the measures will take time.
