Nehammer enjoy Easter on vacation - Vice President of the EIB from September!

The former Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer becomes Vice President of the European Investment Bank (EIB) and is currently enjoying his vacation during the sunny Easter day. During this time he likes to share photos of himself and his dog Fanny in the spring weather while he is preparing for his new role. His start of service is planned for September 2025, such as OE24 reported.

Nehammer was nominated by the SPÖ finance minister Markus Marterbauer for the directorate post at EIB. In this function, he will take on a key role in reconstruction in Ukraine and in structural measures in Southeast Europe. This appointment comes at a time when Austria has again received a nomination right for the EIB, which underlines the relevance of its position.

content and comparison with other offices

As Vice President of the EIB, Nehammer receives a gross salary of 31,536 euros, which is comparable to that of a Vice President of the European Commission. This income exceeds that of the Austrian Federal President, who earns 26,701 euros gross, as well as that of the Federal Chancellor with 23,840 euros gross, which also enhances Nehammer's new position. In addition, on eib.org emphasizes that the president and vice president of the EIB does not receive any bonus payments, which makes his position more stable and planned.

Wilhelm Molterer, former finance minister and ÖVP chief, had already served as Vice President of EIB from 2011 to 2015. This continuity in the management could be an advantage for the future cooperation and structure of the EIB.

functions and tasks of the EIB

The EIB works closely with other EU institutions and has set itself the goal of awarding loans in areas such as climate protection, digitization, security, agriculture and social infrastructure in order to promote European integration. In his new office, Nehammer will represent an important link between the bank and the EU member countries, the representatives of which are sitting in the nine-member management committee of the EIB.

FAZIT: Nehammer's rise to the EIB is not only an important step for his career, but also an opportunity for Austria to gain influence in one of the most important European financial institutions.
