Munich: Stadtwerke reach 100% green electricity - a milestone!
München, Deutschland - The Stadtwerke Munich (SWM) have announced today that from 2025 they will generate as much green electricity from their own systems as the current power consumption in Munich is. This decision follows the 2009 city council decision, which is aiming for ecological electricity generation in Munich. Dr. Florian Bieberbach, board member of the SWM, emphasizes that the early introduction to renewable projects was decisive for success before institutional investors entered the market. In the past 16 years, the SWM has invested around 4.2 billion euros in the expansion of renewable energies, of which EUR 3.5 billion has already flowed back by the end of 2024. This shows how seriously the SWM make its contribution to the energy transition.
The expected electricity consumption in Munich for 2025 is around 6.2 terawatt hours (TWH). The municipal utilities assume that despite a possibly bad wind year, they will be able to produce 6.7 TWh of green electricity annually. This number exceeds the forecast consumption and demonstrates the progress of the SWM in the production of sustainable energy. It should be emphasized that around 90% of the 6.7 TWh generated comes from wind turbines, which are mainly located in Scandinavia and on the North Sea coast.
Expansion of capacities and future projects
The SWM currently operates a large number of energy generation plants, including 13 hydropower plants, two wind turbines, four solar parks, three geothermal systems, a biomass plant and 233 solar systems in and around Munich. In the coming months, three new solar parks will be put into operation in Zengermoos, Garching and Stachusried. In particular, the photovoltaic system in Zengermoos will be the largest of its kind in Munich's surrounding area, with an annual generation of 44 GWh.
For the coming years, the SWM has planned another strategic expansion in the field of wind energy. Among other things, this includes the contract for a wind farm in Schernfeld, which is to include six wind turbines by 2030. In addition, further wind projects are already being planned, such as a system in Rammertshofen, which is due to go into operation in 2026. SWM is also involved in the offshore wind area with numerous projects in Europe to further expand their share of renewable energies.
long -term goals and climate neutrality
The Stadtwerke Munich is aiming for a complete climate neutrality by 2040, which would be the case five years before the nationwide goal. Bieberbach has emphasized that to achieve this goal, the expansion of renewable energies beyond 2025 is absolutely necessary. The electricity consumption in Munich is expected to continue to increase, with forecasts of 6.8 TWH by 2030 and 8.2 TWh until 2040.
The successful implementation of these ambitious plans is supported by the constant adaptation to local and national framework. This also includes the loosening of the 10H rule, which had affected the SWM project pipeline in the past. With almost 250 projects in the region, however, the local contribution to ecological energy generation remains low, since only 7.6% of the green electricity in Bavaria is generated.
Overall, the SWM show that they have not only made an excellent progress in the production of renewable energies, but also pursue a clear vision for the future. Through continuous investments and innovations, you would like to become one of the leading cities in sustainable energy generation.
