McLaren withdraws from Formula E - new focus on hypercar!
London, Großbritannien - mcLaren Racing has officially announced that the team will no longer be part of the Fia Formula e World Championship after the season finale in London, which takes place on July 26th and 27th. The withdrawal takes place in the course of a strategic review of the company's racing portfolio. CEO ZAK Brown expressed his pride in the achievements in Formula E and explained that the time was ripe to explore new opportunities that better match the organization of McLaren Racing. McLaren entered Formula E for the first time in 20222/23, in the ninth edition of the series and had achieved strong performance since then, including three podium for driver Taylor Barnard in the first five races of this season.
The withdrawal also takes place in the context of a new strategic orientation that aims to enter the hypercar class of the FIA World Endurance Championship in 2027. McLaren had previously taken over the license from Mercedes after he decided not to take part in the design of the third generation Powertrain. At the moment, drivers Taylor Barnard and Sam Bird work under the banner of the Neom McLaren Formula e team, with Barnard currently securing fourth place in the World Cup ranking, while Bird is in 13th place.strategic realignment and future prospects
The decision to leave Formula E is accompanied by an intensive analysis of the entire racing portfolio of McLaren. The team intends to commit the last racing event of the season, while at the same time it evaluates opportunities for future competitions after the 2024/25 season. Team Principal Ian James, who was installed by Mercedes, emphasized that the success of the team was not unnoticed and thanked the partners and fans for their support. He will now tackle the challenge of finding a buyer for the Formula E team.
With the planned concentration on the World Endurance Championship and the other racing series, McLaren could be the only motorsport team from 2027 that will start in Formula 1, Indycar and World Endurance Championship. This could significantly increase the visibility and load -bearing capacity of the McLaren brand in international motorsport.
Overall, the withdrawal shows a clear strategic realignment that aims to show presence in growing markets. While Formula E offered some successes for McLaren, such as the award of Barnard as the youngest polesitter at the Jeddah E-Prix, the long-term goals of the company are clearly aimed at other, more potentially lucrative championships. The McLaren Racing Organization remains optimistic and continues to evaluate opportunities for their near and distant sporting goals.
