Mattia Casse celebrates sensational Super-G victory in Val Gardena!
The Italian ski star Mattia Casse celebrated his first World Cup victory at the Super-G in Val Gardena on Friday - at the proud age of 34! Casse beat American Jared Goldberg by a stunning margin of just a hundredth of a second, while Switzerland's Marco Odermatt, who started the race as favorite, finished 0.43 seconds behind the winner. Casse started the race with start number 10 and mastered the challenging, snowy slope as the best driver. "I love riding in these conditions. I've tried it many times, but today is the day!" commented the beaming winner. This performance marks a significant moment in his career as he had previously finished third three times in the 2022/23 season, but never reached the top of the podium like that crown reported.
Surprising triumph and strong performances from the Italians
Casse had already shown himself to be a serious contender in the training runs, winning first and taking second place in the second training session. The victory in Val Gardena is not only a personal success for Casse, but also one for the Italian team, which shone in front of the home crowd. In addition to Casse, Dominik Paris from Ultimo took tenth place, and Pietro Zazzi also contributed to the success of the “Azzurri” with an eleventh place. But the race didn't go according to plan for all Italian skiers: Christof Innerhofer, Florian Schieder and Max Perathoner disappointed with weak results. The Austrian team experienced similar difficulties and, after a one-two finish last year, were unable to place a rider in the top ten. Vincent Kriechmayr was the best ÖSV athlete with twelfth place daily newspaper held on.
The next highlight of the 57th Saslong Classic is already approaching: The downhill classic, which starts at 11:45 a.m., promises exciting competitions and excitement for the spectators. All eyes will be on the athletes as they battle for top times on the demanding course.
