Food prices in Austria rise: purchasing becomes more expensive than ever!

An analysis of the Chamber of Labor has compared the prices of 40 common products across seven retail chains. There is a striking price difference between supermarkets and discounters: purchasing in supermarkets costs an average of 10.2 percent more. Since the beginning of the wave of inflation in September 2021, the shopping basket has increased from around 51 euros to almost 81 euros.

At the same time there were also price cuts: 12 out of 40 products were up to 24 percent cheaper in the year, including potatoes. Despite these positive developments, 21 of the 40 products recorded drastic price increases of up to 96.1 percent.

Since July 2020, food prices have risen by 34 percent, with the main causes such as olive oil, the price of which was raised by 113 percent, and sugar, which was 83 percent more expensive.
