On April 27, 2025, the 64th international cherry flower race took place in Wels, Upper Austria. At this prestigious event, Alexander Konychev from the Vorarlberg team secured an impressive victory. After a racing distance of around 170 kilometers and a racing period of almost four hours, Konychev set off around 10 kilometers before the finish with a decisive attack that secured first place.

Jon Knoll took second place from the Rembe-Rad-Net team with a gap of seven seconds, while Fabian Steininger from WSA-KTM Graz reached third place. The Vorarlberg team was strong overall, with Emanuel Zangerle in sixth place and Jannis Peter in seventh place.

Team services and overall leadership

Thanks to Konychev's victory, the Vorarlberg team takes the lead in the individual and team ranking of Cycling League Austria. In addition to Konychev, the entire team of the team also included Emanuel Zangerle, Daniel Geismayr, Colin Stüssi, Felix Stehli, Jannis Peter, Dominik Amann, Liam Crowley, Laurin Nenning and Kilian Feurstein. Konychev gratefully commented on his team after the race and emphasized that they had always checked the action in the race.

A top group formed early in the race, which also included Kilian Feurstein. Additional attacks came from Daniel Geismayr and Felix Stehli before Konychev dared to make the decisive advance. This tactical finesse ultimately led to a clear victory and gave the team valuable points in the overall ranking.

Cycling in 2020 and afterwards

While the cherry flower race is an important stage within the cycling season, the review of the 2020 season is reminiscent of the dramatic changes in the sports landscape. The Corona pandemic strongly influenced the racing calendar and led to numerous overlaps in the appointment. This year there were 104 bike races within just 100 days, which meant intensive competition and a variety of challenges for the athletes.

The 2020 season illustrated a generation change in cycling, with many young talents who challenged the top performers of the older generation. Tadej Pogačar and Wout van Aert were among the winners of the important bike races of that time. The dynamics within the teams have also changed, with some teams such as UAE Team Emirates and Jumbo-Visma celebrating outstanding successes.

The rise of Alexander Konychev and his Vorarlberg team is a new chapter in this exciting sport, which shows that a lot of potential and a lot of exciting racing action are also waiting in the current cycling season.
