Coalition crisis: FPÖ and ÖVP before crucial phone call at 11 a.m.!

There is currently a lot of simmering in the coalition negotiations between the FPÖ and the ÖVP. At the heart of the conflict is the controversial division of ministries. The FPÖ, led by Herbert Kickl, made a “final offer” to the ÖVP, which was apparently linked to an 11 a.m. deadline. However, this ultimatum is given by the FPÖ itself to the press denied. A crucial phone call between Kickl and ÖVP chairman Christian Stocker is scheduled for 11 a.m., but a personal meeting is a long time coming. The tension is rising – a breakthrough is urgently needed.

Departmental division in focus

The fronts seem to have hardened: the Freedom Party continues to demand the Ministry of the Interior and Finance. Kickl comments on the negotiations in a video on social media and emphasizes that it was the ÖVP that placed the focus on the departments. He criticizes the fact that no compromises can be reached on contentious issues until the structure is clarified. In his video statement, Kickl warns: “Anyone who claims otherwise is trying to deceive the Austrian population,” reports 5min.at.

The ÖVP, on the other hand, has presented the FPÖ with a new counteroffer. This stipulates that the FPÖ will have its own ministry for asylum and migration. However, the FPÖ rejected the idea that a finance ministry could remain under ÖVP control. A State Secretary for Asylum in the ÖVP-led Ministry of the Interior is also not accepted. In addition, experts question the legal framework for such adjustments. A constitutional majority for the desired redistribution of powers is considered highly unlikely, which makes the negotiations complicated.

In the midst of this political confusion, even the Vorarlberg ÖVP state governor Markus Wallner expresses sharp criticism of Kickl's actions, which he describes as a “rush of power”. Kickl counters that these are not power games, but rather fair negotiations. Given the unclear future of the talks, it remains to be seen whether the two parties can finally agree on a common ministry layout.
