Carinthia's lido: environmental awareness in focus at cleanliness event!

On August 10, 2025, an event took place in the public lido Ferndorf that dealt with the pressing topics climate protection, waste prevention and circular economy. Experts discussed the integration of environmental awareness into everyday life. Among the participants was State Councilor Sara Schaar, who emphasized the central role of waste management for environmental and climate protection policy. She pointed out that Carinthia has achieved remarkable savings of 57% of greenhouse gas emissions in waste management since 1990. The goal is to continue this positive trend and motivate citizens to participate.

In his speech, Mayor Josef Haller emphasized the initiative for the cleanliness of the region. Katja Steinhauser, the organizer of the event, presented a diverse program that covered aspects such as waste prevention, recycling and environmental education. A highlight was the introduction of the "separator" in the lido, a showcase project for waste separation. Günther Weigand, Managing Director of the Spittal waste management association, added that environmental and climate protection begins with everyone. The event ended with a clean-up and a sundowner party to further raise awareness of the environment. Felix Krainer from Planet Matters pointed out the urgency of action in environmental protection.

climate protection and circular economy in the EU

parallel to the event in Carinthia, the Federal Environment Agency publishes reports that deal with the climate protection potential of the circular economy in Germany and the EU. In these reports, the greenhouse gas reduction potential for 2017 and 2030 is analyzed, and ecological balance methods are used. Especially in the area of settlement waste, industrial and commercial waste as well as construction and demolition waste, the potential for increasing climate protection is emphasized. An important knowledge of the study is the influence of the energy transition on the role of the circular economy in climate protection.

The EU has set itself the goal of establishing a comprehensive circular economy by 2050. Measures such as the creation of digital product passes and the introduction of regulations to improve the durability and repair of products are the focus. These initiatives are part of a larger plan to reduce the dependence on non-sustainable raw materials and to promote the recycling of critical raw materials. In this context, a new law on critical raw materials was passed in December 2023 to improve environmental and social standards in resource recovery and use.

In summary, the event in the Labitbad Feldorf shows how important local education and participation in climate protection measures are. At the same time, the reports of the Federal Environment Agency and the EU initiatives underline that an integrative approach is required at the political and social level to achieve the climate targets and to secure a sustainable future. Only through the cooperation between individuals, communities and countries can the urgently needed turn to succeed for more environmental awareness and waste prevention.
