Carinthia's emperor warns: EU centralization endangers our regions!
Kärnten, Österreich - On July 17, 2025, Carinthia's Governor Peter Kaiser warns of the potential negative consequences of a new EU budget proposal, which provides for increased medium-sized needs for the period from 2028 to 2034, but also introduces cuts in the social field. According to Emperor, the EU strives for a central award of grants, which in his opinion could weaken the regions. He emphasizes that this centralization of the Union harms and asks the Federal Government to work in Brussels to maintain direct regional funding. In the past, Carinthia has promoted regional development with three billion euros from EU funding programs, which contributed to the creation of highly developed technology locations and family-friendly regions.
The concerns of emperors are underpinned by the general structure of EU regional policy, which is strongly designed for regional investments. According to the German representation of the EU , over 94 percent of the EU budget will go to the EU to the citizens, municipalities and companies. These funding is crucial for projects in the areas of regional and urban development, social integration, agriculture and innovation.
core areas of EU regional policy
The EU regional policy is divided into five core areas that are intended to do so, business growth, employment and quality of life in all regions and cities:
- Investments in people: promotion of employment, education and social integration.
- Promotion of small and medium -sized companies.
- Promotion of research and innovation through investments and research -related jobs.
- Improvement of the environment through larger investment projects.
- Modernization of traffic and energy industry, especially through renewable energies.
The administration of EU funding is largely in the hands of the national authorities, which means that the federal states in Germany are responsible for the selection and control of the funded projects. Innovative companies can also apply for EU funding through various programs, such as the EIC accelerator. This shows the possibility that despite the concerns of Kaiser to centralize, there are still opportunities for regional developments.
Ultimately, Kaiser appeals to the importance of the regions for the future of Europe. He is firmly convinced that the decisions about the development of the EU must be made in the cities and regions to ensure sustainable and inclusive development.
